One reason Rätsel and I began to write about music was because of physical album sales. There has been a consistent decline in physical album sales that have affected the artists in more ways than one. Our goal is to promote the purchase of physical copies, in hopes that we can revive a lost art of appreciating a tangible copy of your favorite music. Our passion in music extends to any and all sorts of genres. We embrace the advances in technology that allow us to stream the latest in an instant. I myself am guilty of that. I have multiple stations on my Pandora account that I have essentially perfected over the years. I spent the weekend streaming the latest Disturbed "Live at Red Rocks" album on Spotify as well.
After reading what Mat Cosgrove & Rhys Flannery of A Breach Of Silence wrote for Eclipse Records a moment ago, I came to an instant realization, I have been hurting the very artists I love. A quote from Mat Cosgrove gives a wide-eyed awakening to the realization of the music industry today in connection with free music streaming, "Best-case scenario, a 12 album song needs to be streamed about 125 times (1,500 total streams) on a subscription-based plan to equal the sale of an album" (Eclipse Records). The latest music video by the heavy-metal quintet, "Falling Away" gives light to the issue. Off of a free streaming service, artists are getting paid fractions of a penny per streams, something like (.0009). Check out the powerful music video below and comment !
For many like ourselves here at The Skeptics' Review we still get the nostalgic feeling of going to our favorite record store to purchase the very latest. We also go to the music store to buy vintage vinyl records and cassettes in the attempt to preserve music for the next generation. I recently purchased the digital copy of a Grammy-winning doom-metal band on iTunes and although I absolutely love the music, it was not the same as buying a physical copy. So to everyone out there, take it from Rätsel, myself, Eclipse Records, A Breach Of Silence and every single artist who works on their music diligently and passionately, purchase your music from the artist themselves, purchase physical copies, or simply pay less than 6 bucks a month for unlimited music.
Be sure to follow A Breach Of Silence as they get ready to release their 3rd album, "Secrets" ! They have our support to once again debut at #1 on the Australian iTunes Metal Chart
A special thank you to Eclipse Records & A Breach Of Silence for this powerful message !
