The sophomore EP to the incredible Perdition, Discordian is back with yet another great one, this one entitled, Abolition. Now with four brand new tracks, the fellas have continued to push forward, sending their music across the hemispheres eagerly anticipating their next move in the heavy metal music scene. Upon the release of Abolition, Vocals & Guitars are Will Jessop, Rhys Bird. Tom Ali on Bass, and on drums, Mr. Chris Sargeantson.
Faceless
Staccato shredding on guitars equally matched by the rest of the band, I am immediately recalled to the techniques of heavy metal pioneers like Pantera. The vocals remain razor sharp for the head banger. In contrast to the aggressiveness of the verses, the chorus provides the fresh breath needed to recover from the verses. A slight melody in the lyrics sung, “There’s no way out this time, watch the hands tick on grating your skin as you run, (There’s nothing left) there’s nothing left, you cannot distract yourself when you’re coming undone, I have you now.” The guitar solo at the center of the track is worthy of attention and gives credit to the style of playing that’s only shown by a veteran player.
Inertia
Once more giving listeners the changes in time signatures that allows one to dive right in, rewind, reset, and repeat. I am blown away by the chemistry shared within this band. It is well heard within this record. The talent that is being given and fed off of to one another allows them to grow rapidly and gain many more strengths. Now, the meaning of this track does elude me and would like for Will Jessop to weigh in on this track, Inertia.
Masochistic Nostalgia Machine
The slower tempo of the quartet of songs. We uncover more melody in vocals and instrumentation. What continues to intrigue me is the depth presented in the lyrics. These were present in Discordian’s first EP, Perdition. Here, verse one is dark and quite ominous. Obviously the lingering imagery of the past haunts one causing this Masochistic Nostalgia Machine. Whether it be metaphorical or it be literal is all too real in many. Quite daunting!
Sever
The irony, a soft welcoming introduction in contrast to the title and lyrics. This time around we have the harmony in the verse and the aggressive vocals in the chorus. With the killer guitar features and crashing drums this one alongside Masochistic Nostalgia Machine are my favorites on the EP.
It almost feels like a story being told throughout Abolition. With the exception of the meaning to Inertia (until I find out). In Faceless, we learn of the individual, the character… this faceless one. Jumping to track three, we listen to the effects caused by the remnants left behind. In the end we go into the self-explanatory track, Sever, “If it still escapes you, I hope you choke. I hope you choke. I hope you choke. I hope your lungs collapse and cut off the air to your throat.”
The lyrics written are not for the weak minded by any means. Nor do they invite any sense of wrong doing. As I have mentioned before, Discordian provides therapy towards oneself in trying times. The music is genius and composed by those who value their craft for musicianship. The lyrics come from thoughts expressed in a journal set to music. Overall another great EP for Discordian as they continue to rise in the heavy metal scene in the United Kingdom. Take the time and check out their latest music below and lets show them our support.
