A five piece band of Italian origin, and currently unsigned, Frozen Sand started in 2010, and the best genre I can put them under is as they described for me; alternative/melodic progressive metal. As you may have guessed, they aren't very well known, but judging from their latest four track EP, they have potential.
This band started out, as I stated, in 2010, January 2010 to be exact. The original three members got together to invent something new, something fresh. With the addition of Luca Pettinaroli on lead vocals, and Federico De Benedetti on guitar in August of 2010, the line-up was complete, and worked hard to complete their first EP, self-titled "Frozen Sand". In the months to follow, they evolved to make their own sound more unique, and to test it out, they performed several concerts and went straight back to writing. The end result is this very EP about to be examined; "Shelved Ambition". So, here we are today.
This style that they play is quite new, as they were expecting. Many qualities make up the music that they make, but it mainly boils down to melodic/psychedelic/alternative/progressive rock. Sounds crazy, I know, but the music is quite great.
Frozen Sand is: Luca Pettinaroli: vocals, Federico De Benedetti: guitar, Tiziano Vitiello: bass, Mattia Cerutti: guitar, and Simone De Benedetti on drums.
1) Stranger Of My Heart: Here is a very heart-felt track. A very melodic tune to give you a glimpse at their talents in melodies and harmonies. In this song, it's obvious they have talent, and they sure know how to build up a song. I love how it progresses from a soft, gentle song to a heavy metal ballad in a way.
2) Capital Vice: This song shows off what this band can do musically. They really put all of themselves into this song so everyone can see what they are capable of, and they really go all out. This song also shows off their progressive side and how well they execute their tempo changes so that they're fluid and not sounding like the song changed all of a sudden. Besides being a well written track, it's also quite catchy. The riffs on the guitars and bass are strong and not too complicated, and the drums really lock in the groove with some good double bass skills and neat fills here and there.
3) My Double Self: This song is one that shows the darker side of what they can do. If I'm not mistaken, this song talks about the duality of man; the person we are in public, and the person we are when no one is around; and the struggles of dealing with such things. I really like the intro with the tapping on the guitars' neck, real nice. The singer also shows his darker talents with growls that were only hinted at in the previous track "Capital Vice". A great track indeed.
4) The Statement: This last track on this here EP is an instrumental, and is a neat record closer. It's mysterious, heavy, and interesting. Not much can be said about this song, except that it leaves you hanging and expecting something more. Neat closer.
This band has obvious potential, and I can see these guys really getting somewhere with their music. They have the talent and passion, as you can hear in their music.
I only have one suggestion for the band. Of course, this being only their second EP, they might still be a little nervous, and it seems to me that the vocals are a little shakey. I don't know if it's because you're nervous or not confident, but, I only suggest that you loosen up a little, open your throat, relax the jaw, and just have fun with it.
I look forward to hear what you guys have next. Keep up the good work.
